В платежном балансе (balance of payments) фиксируются внешнеэкономические операции, которые могут быть не связаны с денежными платежами, а некоторые из них не предусматривают каких бы то ни было платежей вообще. Самые многочисленные и наиболее важные из учитываемых в платежном балансе - операции , в процессе которых одна из участвующих сторон (экономических единиц) передает другой стороне стоимостный объем продукта, созданного в рамках данной национальной экономики (economic value), получая взамен равный стоимостный объем продукта другой стороны. Такие операции могут быть названы обменными (current transaction). Стоимостный объем как продукт обмена подразделяется в широком смысле на две категории - реальные ресурсы, включающие в себя товары, услуги и доходы (goods, services, income), и финансовые средства (financial items). С финансовыми средствами связан не только переход права собственности по существующим требованиям и обязательствам, но также ликвидация последних либо создание новых требований и обязательств. Операции, в процессе которых совершаются односторонние трансферты (unilateral transfers), отличаются от обменных операций тем, что в данном случае одна из сторон передает другой некоторый стоимостный объем, не получая взамен эквивалентной компенсации. Распределение или аннулирование специальных прав заимствования (allocation of special drawing rights) (SDR) сходно с односторонними трансфертами в том, что в данном случае резидент получает либо отдает финансовые активы, не обменивая их на объект, обладающий стоимостным объемом. Отличается от односторонних трансфертов тем, что в ней участвует только одна сторона (резидент), и, таким образом, перехода активов от одной экономической единицы к другой не происходит.
